Sur
Caribe's Turn. By Omar Vázquez. Cultural section. Granma,
June 10th, 2003.
The
House of the Music (Casa de la Música) was full again.
This time was Sur Caribe, the attraction of a young audience that
seems to have no limits to dance and follows the Band that in
the year 2000 became the biggest seller of EGREM copies with which
it crossed the limits of the Eastern Region where they were the
protagonists.
Sur
Caribe plays an important role in the reappearance of a phenomenon:
to see our youth dancing our music by couples. Sur Caribe.....con
tó (with everything) its last CD, has inserted a different
kind of Son saturated of Conga Santiaguera.
The
selection of the repertoire and a good interpretation with Roberto
la Rosa, piano and Chicho Darromá, Tres, have made possible
that El poder de las Mujeres (The Power of Women), Guajira con
un Tumbao by Piloto and Vera (enriched with solos by Jorge Leliebre,
Van Van´s flute player), Para que te Vuelvas Loca (To drive
you Crazy) and El Sábado es Sensacional (Saturday is sensational)by
Pedrito calvo are in the List of Hits of the National Radio.Ricardo
Leyva caballeros, its current Director and composer, joined his
fate to Sur Caribe in 1987. "It has been a long and difficult
process because this is not the first recording but it is the
one that has had a national promotion, a recognition. For the
rest of the country, it has been a discovery. We are also proud
of having sold all the copies and made one more re-edition". In
the conversation with Ricardo Leyva a topic arised; the new CD
they are recording, Aprendí Caminando (I learnt on the
Way) ( a song of Leyva that is being promoted) with the participation
of the same team of Sur Caribe. con
tó (with everything).
"I
wish - he says- the album were like a musical tribune because
so many collegues have expressed their interest in participate
and they contribute to increase its level. Pedrito Calvo and Cándido
Fabré sing ¡Oh la Barbería¿ (Oh, the
Barber's shop), another song I wrote. We have also Angelito Bonne,
the rapper Candyman, Jorge Leliebre, Eulises Benavides (Trombone
from el Charangón de Revé and Jorge Luis Cortés)".Leyva,
pianist and, like the rest of the Band´s members, graduated
from our School of Art recognizes the influences of those he are
in debt: "Juan Formell, for his orchestrations, was the musician
who encourages me the most. I realized that being from Santiago
de Cuba contributes to the our music, its Congas and all that
is seen in the Band. I also feel closed to Felix B. Caignet whom
I followed as a composer and the magic of la Trova, its lyrics. |

Sur
Caribe finished a new CD. Pedro de Oraá will present a
new book and inaugurate an exposition. By Gabriel.
The Band from Santiago, Sur Caribe, presented to the Press its
last CD and cassette entitled Caminando (Walking), with which
they want to keep the popularity achieved last year when awarded
by the Empresa de Grabaciones y Ediciones Musicales (EGREM) (Musical
Recording and Edition Enterprise) with the Prize of The Best Dancing
Album of the Year for their previous recording Sur Caribe con
to´. The boys of the Director and composer Ricardo Leyva
invited again a group of artists for this new production, such
as Angelito Bonne, the rapper Candyman, Pedrito Calvo and Cándido
fabré.
The Band was founded in 1987 and unlike other cases, they were
prophets in their own land before moving to the capital. In the
year 2000, among other songs, they popularised La Demanda (The
Demand); 2001, El poder de las mujeres (The Power of Women) and
now they have as hits La pelota de la Suerte (The lucky ball)
and Aprendí Caminando (I learnt on my Way).
This Band is composed of young men from Santiago graduated from
the Schools of Music and they can be divided in mall formats of
traditional music. (Pedro Herrera Echavarría). |

Tropicana
Internacional No. 16 – 2004. From Santiago de Cuba Sur Caribe
came to settle down. By: Luis Ríos Vega.
Photos: Juan G. Cuadras.
In terms of music, we have heard many times about Geographic
Fatalism when dealing with the popularity of Cuban Bands. I don’t
believe that as long as the price of the musical product breaks
the taboo that says “distance affects”. It is true
that the possibilities of the Bands from the provinces are, somehow,
smaller than in the capital; but the bands that work here have
to make good products to be popular. We had this small disquisition
with Ricardo Leyva, Director of Sur Caribe, while looking at the
CD con tó (with everything).
I wanted something authentic, new by changing the format of three
trombones, three singers and a good Cuban base. At the beginning,
the Band was called Conjunto Renovación Santiago and decided
to change it and name it Sur Caribe. From this point, we had our
first success with a Colombian porro called “Mi Cafetal
“.
Born in Santiago de Cuba, Sur Caribe has the necessary difference
not to be turned into another Cuban band. We have enjoyed the
songs that have the flavour and the musical colour that have nothing
to do with the gray tonalities of other bands.
Sur Caribe faced a second change over two years ago. In that
moment we decided to include other things such as drum, kettledrum
and keyboard. There is when our first CD with EGREM came out,
Sur Caribe con tó; that proved we could create. This is
why we are working on this production not to be regional but national
with other foreign artists. We have received a good critic from
this CD even via Internet. |
